Nest Box Details Body

Nest Box Types Our Nest Boxes are constructed out of two types of wood in either 12mm or 18mm thicknesses. Sterling Board - Best described as made from compressed wood shavings. Exterior Ply Board - Best described as made from gluing thin layers of wood together. Exterior Ply Board is more Weather Resistant and better used for the Larger Boxes or Small Boxes exposed to the worst of the weather. We have a large number of Tit Boxes made from Sterling Board mounted in 1997. We have found that after 5 years a number of these are nearing the end of there life and will require replacing. The Sterling Board Boxes in sheltered locations are however still in good condition and should last a good 7 years. The Exterior Ply Board Boxes have a longer lifespan and only the boxes in the most exposed locations are startling to show signs of requiring replacement after 7 years. The Large 18mm Sterling Board Boxes are starting to show signs of wear after 7 years exposure to the weather but still have a few more years life left in them. These are better suited for Sheltered Locations or mounted in Barns. The 18mm Exterior Ply Board Boxes simply last ages. Boxes can be supplied Bare or with the Exterior Treated with one of the Wildlife Friendly Coatings seen below. The Internals of the Treated Boxes are left Bare. We have found that the Bare Boxes are used more readily in areas where the prospective occupants have a choice of Nesting Sites. When Ordering your Treated Nest Boxes please specify the Colour by adding one of the following letters to the end of the Product Code. Nest Box Features We have tried a number of Lid attachment methods over the years and always arrived back at the Plastic Flap method for Nest Boxes that we Monitor and Ring the Pulli at. For Boxes that are not going to be monitored or if you just prefer not to see the Plastic Strip, we also make them with the Lift of Lid or Sliding Inspection Door, depending on box design. All the Boxes with Opening Lids are fitted with Staples allowing Plastic Ties to be used to Secure the Lid. These are easily snipped for inspection and then replaced with a new one once the Box has been inspected. Please remember to dispose of the Old Ties in a responsible manner. Owl Boxes with Inspection Doors are secured in a similar way. See Box Accessories for additional Lid and Inspection Door Tie Packs. Tit, Flycatcher and Starling Boxes have 4, 9mm Ø Pre-drilled Mounting Holes and are supplied with 6 Long Ties for Mounting the Boxes. Flat Pack Nest Boxes !!!
All of our Wooden Box Designs and Types are available in a Flat Pack Form with all the parts such as Nails and Plastic included along with Mounting Ties. Entrance and Mounting Holes are Pre-drilled removing the need for Power Tools or Saws and the Treated Boxes will have already been painted for you too. All you need is a Hammer and Solid Flat Surface to work on while following the easy to use Assembly Instructions supplied with the pack. The Flat Packs will make ideal Projects for Schools or Events.

	Description : Nest Chamber Area to bottom of Entrance Hole (LxWxH) 150mm x 150mm x 130mm. Entrance Hole 32mm Ø. Back Plate Height 380mm.

	Mounting Location : We have found that the internal dimensions have more of a bearing on box use than the Mounting Location, especially for Tits. Most of our Boxes are set at about 1.5m height so we can monitor them without the use of Steps or Ladders. Place the Box away from regular disturbance is about the only rule. Birds do not read Bird Books !!! Mounting below 1.5m may attract Willow Tit or Robin.

	Description : Based on the Tit Box above. Nest Chamber Area to top of Front (LxWxH) 150mm x 150mm x 100mm. Back Plate Height 380mm. The Lid of this Box is fixed and the plastic is used to prevent Rain entering the Back of the Box.

	Mounting Location : We have had some success with this type of Box but we do not have many locations that this type of box would be widely used. Spotted Flycatchers tend to prefer the boxes mounted above 2m on a wall covered by some type of creeper. Mounting below 2m may still attract Spotted Flycatchers but you are more likely to attract Robin.

	Description : Based on the Tit Box design but on a larger scale. Nest Chamber Area to bottom of Entrance Hole (LxWxH) 230mm x 230mm x 260mm. Entrance Hole 50mm Ø. Back Plate Height 610mm. We have found the 18mm Sterling or 12mm Ply to be more readily used.

	Mounting Location : This type of Box has proved successful with Starlings in York, on Houses and on Industrial Sites. The 18mm Boxes weigh nearly 7kg so safety needs to be considered when mounting via a Ladder or Steps. The Boxes are also used for Starlings on the edge of Woodland, and in Woodlands for Great Spotted Woodpeckers (When filled with Polystyrene Foam). Mounting should be at least 2m high. We have had a majority of boxes used in the 5m to 8m range.

	Description : The Popular Barn Owl A-Frame Box Design for Mounting both Externally and Internally. . Approximate Dimensions, Internal Area Max (LxHxD) 915mm x 915mm x 420mm with a 350mm x 420mm Internal Baffle/Ledge to keep out the worst of the weather from the Nesting Area and also act as an internal resting Ledge. The 18mm Boxes weigh nearly 15kg so safety needs to be considered when mounting via a Ladder or Steps. 	Description : A New Design taking the best aspects of several other designs we have tried over the years. A cross between the Starling and Barn Owl Box best describes it. Approximate Dimensions, Internal Area (LxWxH) 300mm x 300mm x 220mm with a Back Plate Height of 500mm. Off Centre Entrance Hole 70mm Ø with an Internal Baffle parallel with the Front. Inspection of the Box Contents is carried out by lifting the Lid as in the Tit and Starling Box Designs. 6 9mm Ø Holes are Pre-drilled into the Back Plate but no Box Mountings are supplied with these Boxes. We recommend the use of the 5m Band Pack with Fasteners MP07-01 @ £3.99 as shown in the Box Accessories section for mounting on Trees or one of the Large Bolt Packs if Mounting the Box on a Building.

	Mounting Location : Ideally in Farmland with Hedgerows containing Trees, Typical Little Owl country. The 18mm Boxes weigh nearly 7kg so safety needs to be considered when mounting via a Ladder or Steps. Mounting should be at least 2m high and away from Regular Disturbance.

	Description : A Wire Framed Wicker Nesting Basket. Approximate Dimensions 400mmØ = 170mm Deep. Supplied with 6 Long Ties for Mounting.

	Mounting Location : Depends on the Species you are trying to attract to the Nesting Basket. Sparrowhawks will tend to select sites that have a relatively dense Leaf Canopy, even if in a small group of trees. Long-eared Owls prefer dense Hawthorn Thickets. Mounting should be at least 4m high and away from Disturbance for both of these Species. Mounting in other habitats may attract other species.

Bat Boxes

	Description : Roost Chamber Area (LxWxH) 150mm x 150mm x 230mm. Entrance Slit 15-20mm Wide. Back Plate Height 610mm. All sizes are approximate and may vary slightly. Boxes are made from 18mm Board to retain warmth. Ply Box Internals are sawn to rough surface and allow Bats to grip, Sterling Boxes are slightly rough surfaced as they are. Inspection Boxes have a lid to the same design as our Tit Boxes. Treating Bat Boxes is not recommended.

	Mounting Location : Boxes should be mounted at least 3m high, the higher the better. They should be ideally mounted in clusters of 3 on a tree trunk with no leafy branches within 1m of the box and a clear flight path to the box entrance. The Boxes should be mounted out of the wind and in a location that allows the box to catch the sunlight for part of the day. The best locations are on trees near Woodland Rides or Glades close to water. However boxes mounted on buildings will also be used.

	Species : Various Bats Species but may be used by Blue Tits and other small birds.

	Note : Under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 it is an offence to Disturb, Handle or Kill Bats. We recommend watching the Boxes at Dusk to determine weather the boxes are occupied or not. Alternatively a Bat Detector could be used to listen for Bats calling from the boxes. If you intend inspecting the boxes physically you will require a licence.

	Description : Based on the Tit Box the Chamber Area to bottom of Entrance Hole (LxWxH) 150mm x 150mm x 130mm. Entrance Hole 32mm Ø. Back Plate Height 380mm. Two Spacer Battens.

	Mounting Location : Boxes should be mounted with the two Spacer Battens keeping the box away from the Tree Trunk.

	Species : Designed for Dormice but may be used by other small mammals. Blue Tits and other small birds may also use this type of box.
